What is Tone Generator?
A tone generator produces a pure sine wave at a specified frequency, used for hearing tests, audio equipment testing, instrument tuning reference, and educational demonstrations. The standard musical reference pitch is A4 = 440 Hz. Below 20 Hz is infrasound (felt rather than heard). The typical human hearing range is 20 Hz–20,000 Hz, narrowing with age — most adults over 40 have reduced high-frequency hearing above 12,000–15,000 Hz. Audiologists use specific tone sequences to map hearing sensitivity across frequencies.
This generator uses the Web Audio API to synthesize a pure sine wave at any frequency from 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz with configurable volume. It supports multiple waveform types: sine (pure tone, most natural), square (buzzy, rich in harmonics), triangle (softer than square), and sawtooth (bright, used in synthesizer testing). Frequency can be fine-tuned in 0.1 Hz increments for precise pitch reference. The frequency display updates in real time as you adjust the slider.
- 1
Set the frequency
Enter a frequency in Hz, or drag the slider. Common references: A4 = 440 Hz, middle C = 261.63 Hz.
- 2
Choose waveform type
Select Sine for a pure tone, Square or Sawtooth for harmonic-rich waveforms used in audio testing.
- 3
Adjust volume and play
Set a comfortable volume level and click Play. The tone continues until you click Stop.

Tone Generator FAQs
Quick answers about the workflow, privacy, and where this tool fits in a broader job.
What frequency is middle C?
Middle C (C4) is 261.63 Hz. The A above middle C (A4) is the standard tuning reference at 440 Hz. One octave up doubles the frequency: A5 = 880 Hz. One octave down halves it: A3 = 220 Hz.
Can I use this to test my hearing?
You can get a rough indication of your hearing range by playing tones at various frequencies and noting where you stop hearing them. However, this is not a clinical hearing test. Hearing tests require calibrated equipment and controlled conditions. Consult an audiologist for a proper hearing evaluation.
What is the Schumann resonance and can I play it?
The Schumann resonance is the fundamental electromagnetic resonance of the Earth-ionosphere cavity at approximately 7.83 Hz — in the infrasound range, below typical human hearing (20 Hz). This tool generates frequencies starting at 20 Hz, so 7.83 Hz would not be audible through speakers. Very low bass through subwoofers can reproduce near this range physically.
