What is Audio Recorder?

A browser-based audio recorder captures sound from your microphone using the Web Audio API and the MediaRecorder API, letting you record voice memos, interviews, meeting notes, music ideas, and podcast segments without installing any software. The recording is processed locally in the browser — nothing is uploaded to a server. This matters for confidential interviews, private voice notes, and any recording where the content should not pass through a third-party service.

This recorder captures audio at configurable quality settings and exports in WAV (uncompressed, highest quality) or MP3 (compressed, smaller file size). WAV is preferred when the recording will be further edited, processed through audio software, or converted — since WAV preserves the full recording without encoding artifacts. MP3 is suitable for sharing or storage where file size is a concern. Most browsers support up to 48kHz sample rate recording through the MediaRecorder API.

Audio Recorder FAQs

Quick answers about the workflow, privacy, and where this tool fits in a broader job.

What is the maximum recording length?

Browser-based recording is limited by available device memory. Most modern devices handle recordings of 30–60 minutes without issues. Very long recordings (2+ hours) may consume significant RAM and should use dedicated recording software instead.

Why is my recording quality low?

Browser recording quality depends on microphone hardware, sample rate, and audio interface. Built-in laptop microphones typically capture at lower quality than external USB microphones or audio interfaces. Background noise is also more prominent without acoustic treatment or a directional microphone.

Can I record system audio (not just microphone)?

Most browsers only allow recording from the microphone input by default. Recording system audio (what's playing through speakers) requires OS-level audio routing (virtual audio cable software) or use of screen-sharing APIs that include audio — this is not supported by this tool's standard microphone recording mode.
