What is Tip Calculator?

A tip calculator computes the gratuity amount to add to a restaurant bill, taxi fare, or service charge, and optionally splits the total between multiple diners or riders. Tipping norms vary by country and service type: in the United States, 15–20% is standard for restaurant service (20% is the de facto standard for good service), 15% for taxi, and 10–15% for hotel services. In many European countries, tipping is less common and rounding up the bill is typical.

This calculator handles the full table split scenario: enter the pre-tax or post-tax subtotal, select the tip percentage (or enter a custom amount), then specify the number of people. The result shows the tip per person, the total per person, and the total bill including tip. Rounding options let you round to clean amounts to avoid splitting cents.

Tip Calculator FAQs

Quick answers about the workflow, privacy, and where this tool fits in a broader job.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Either is acceptable by convention, though many etiquette guides suggest tipping on the pre-tax subtotal. The difference is small: on a $50 pre-tax bill with 10% tax, tipping 20% on pre-tax is $10; on post-tax is $11. Most people tip on the total they see on the check.

What is a standard tip at a restaurant?

In the US: 18–20% for good service, 15% for acceptable service, optional below 15% for poor service. In the UK: 10–12.5% or round up. Most of Europe: rounding up or 5–10% is typical. Always check if a service charge is already included.

How do I split a tip unevenly between people?

For uneven splits (some people ordered more), use the total per person calculation and adjust manually. Enter each person's individual subtotal separately in the bill amount field and calculate their individual tip amount, then sum the totals.
