What is Discount Calculator?

A discount calculator computes the final price after a percentage reduction. It answers the most common shopping math questions: What is 30% off $89.99? How much do I save? What was the original price if the sale price is $63 with a 30% discount? These calculations are needed every time you see a percentage-off sale, a promotional code, a clearance rack, or a wholesale price list with margin targets.

This calculator handles both directions of the discount problem: (1) Apply a discount — enter original price and discount percentage to get sale price and savings amount, and (2) Reverse a discount — enter sale price and discount percentage to calculate the original price before the discount. It also calculates the effective discount percentage when you know the original and sale price.

Discount Calculator FAQs

Quick answers about the workflow, privacy, and where this tool fits in a broader job.

How do I calculate 20% off a price?

Multiply the original price by 0.80 (1 - 0.20). For $100: $100 × 0.80 = $80. Savings: $20. Alternative: calculate 20% of $100 = $20, then subtract: $100 - $20 = $80.

Can I stack two discounts?

Yes, but they do not add simply. A 20% discount followed by an additional 10% discount is not 30% off. Calculate sequentially: 20% off $100 = $80, then 10% off $80 = $72. Total effective discount: 28%, not 30%.

How do I find the original price from a sale price?

Use the reverse discount formula: original price = sale price ÷ (1 - discount rate). For a $70 item that is 30% off: $70 ÷ 0.70 = $100 original price. This calculator does this automatically.
